The methods for efficiently covering the ground vary depending on the soil type. A common method for compaction of the earth surface uses a track in three passes (see diagram below).
The outer (black) points being compacted first, followed by the intermediate (blue) and lastly the infilling (red) positions.
This has the effect achieving the best depth of influence. The first pass affects the ground to a deeper level than the latter.
